Chemically, NMN is described by the molecular formula C11H15N2O8P and a molecular mass near 334.22 g/mol. The beta anomer has a CAS Registry Number of 1094-61-7. It is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder for laboratory use. The molecule carries a phosphate group and a positively charged nicotinamide ring, giving it polar and water-soluble character. These properties influence how it is detected, purified, and stored in research and analytical laboratories.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.
Quality control for NMN materials usually covers identity, assay purity, residual solvents, heavy metals, microbial limits, and moisture content. Certificates of analysis from suppliers may report high-performance liquid chromatography purity, mass spectrometry identity, and elemental impurity testing. Regulatory treatment differs by country: NMN is not an approved drug, and its status as a dietary supplement ingredient or novel food has been debated. Some authorities have restricted sales pending safety and regulatory review, while others allow it under specific categories. Buyers should verify documentation rather than rely on label claims.
Quantifying NMN requires methods that separate it from structurally similar compounds such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+. Common approaches include high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet detection, liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry, capillary electrophoresis, and nuclear magnetic resonance for identity confirmation. Because NMN is polar and often present at low concentrations in biological samples, sample preparation can involve protein precipitation, solid-phase extraction, or derivatization. Isotope-labeled internal standards help correct for matrix effects and recovery losses. Reported concentrations depend heavily on the matrix, extraction protocol, and analytical platform.

In the salvage pathway, NMN is generated from nicotinamide and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate by the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. A second route produces NMN from nicotinamide riboside through phosphorylation by nicotinamide riboside kinases. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases, often called NMNAT enzymes. This stepwise route allows cells to recycle nicotinamide and maintain NAD+ levels under changing metabolic conditions. The relative contribution of each route varies by tissue, species, and physiological state, and it remains an active area of research.
Research on NMN has expanded because NAD+ concentrations decline with age in some tissues and because NAD+ participates in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and signaling. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels after NMN administration, but human data are more limited and often focus on safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker changes. Questions remain about oral absorption, tissue distribution, and whether changes in blood NAD+ reflect changes inside specific organs. NMN is not an approved drug, and claims about its clinical effects should be distinguished from established biochemical findings.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
Regulatory treatment of NMN varies by jurisdiction and has changed over time. Some countries allow it in dietary supplements, while others treat it as a novel food ingredient requiring safety review. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has questioned whether NMN can be lawfully marketed as a dietary supplement because of drug preclusion provisions. Sports organizations have separate rules, and NMN is not currently on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list. These differences create uncertainty for manufacturers, retailers, and researchers seeking consistent legal pathways.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide is usually handled as a dry powder because moisture can promote hydrolysis and shorten shelf life. Recommended storage conditions often include a desiccated container at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, with protection from light. Aqueous solutions are less stable than solid material and may degrade faster at ambient temperature or neutral pH. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can introduce variability, so aliquoting is common in laboratory settings. These practices reflect general nucleotide chemistry rather than a single universal protocol.
Research interest in NMN increased after animal studies reported that oral or injected NMN can raise NAD+ levels in some tissues. How NMN is absorbed and distributed in humans is not fully established. Some evidence suggests extracellular NMN may be dephosphorylated to nicotinamide riboside before cellular uptake, while other studies propose specific transport routes. Direct human data on these mechanisms remain limited. Regulatory status also varies: in some countries NMN is treated as a dietary supplement, while elsewhere it is restricted or requires approval, and these differences affect labeling, sale, and research.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide group linked to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. NMN is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, a coenzyme involved in many metabolic reactions. The abbreviation usually refers to the beta anomer, though related forms can exist. In scientific literature, NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another NAD+ precursor.
Regulatory treatment varies by country. In the United States, NMN has been marketed as a dietary supplement, but the Food and Drug Administration has stated that it is excluded from the dietary supplement definition because it was authorized for investigation as a new drug before being marketed as a supplement. Other jurisdictions may treat it as a novel food, a supplement, or an unapproved drug ingredient. Import and sale rules can therefore differ substantially.
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. Because the molecule can absorb water, moisture content and packaging are relevant to shelf life. Suppliers may provide certificates of analysis, but independent verification is often needed for research or commercial use. The long-term stability of different crystal forms, salt forms, and formulations is not fully characterized in the public literature. Some degradation products and their effects on product performance remain open questions.
As a commercial ingredient, nicotinamide mononucleotide is commonly supplied as a powder or capsule. Its stability depends on temperature, moisture, pH, and light exposure. Hydrolytic and thermal degradation can increase over time, so manufacturers and laboratories often store material cold and dry. Purity is typically assessed with chromatographic methods, and identity can be confirmed by mass spectrometry. Published stability data for specific finished products remain limited. More data would help define shelf life under real-world conditions.
=== Sailboat keel === Pen Duick VI, a boat designed by André Mauric and used for racing, was equipped with a keel of depleted uranium. The benefit is that, because of the very high density of uranium, the keel could be thinner for a given weight, and so have less resistance than a normal keel. It was later replaced by a standard lead keel.
== Clinical significance == Narcolepsy is associated with a marked reduction in the number of orexinergic projection neurons from the lateral hypothalamus and very low orexin peptides in cerebrospinal fluid. This has been identified as the mechanism responsible for narcoleptic symptoms. Evidence suggest that OX1 neurons that synapse onto the dorsal nucleus of the vagus nerve and parts of the brain stem may play a role in the pathophysiology of chronic pain and visceral hypersensitivity in functional gastrointestinal disorders.
== Etymology == The town's English name, Holyhead, has existed since at least the 14th century. As is the case with many coastal parts of Wales, the name in English is significantly different from its name in Welsh. It refers to the holiness of the locality and has taken the forms Haliheved, Holiheved, Le Holyhede and Holy Head in the past. The Welsh name, Caergybi, derives from the roman fortification around which the town has developed (Caer in Welsh) and Cybi, the name of a sixth-century saint who is believed to have founded a monastery on the site, alongside the local church. The locality was known by such names as Karkeby (1225), Castro Kyby (1291), and Kaer Gybi (1566). Prior to the influence of the fort on the name, the hamlets which came before it were likely known as Llan y Gwyddel ('church/parish of the Irish') and Eglwys y Beddi ('church of the graves').
== Diagnosis == The term homocystinuria describes an increased excretion of the thiol amino acid homocysteine in urine (and incidentally, also an increased concentration in plasma). The source of this increase may be one of many metabolic factors, only one of which is CBS deficiency. Others include the re-methylation defects (cobalamin defects, methionine synthase deficiency, MTHFR) and vitamin deficiencies including riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin B6), folate (vitamin B9), and cobalamin (vitamin B12). In light of this, a combined approach to laboratory diagnosis is required to reach a differential diagnosis. CBS deficiency may be diagnosed by routine metabolic biochemistry. Genetic testing may be used to screen for known SNPs (mutations). In the first instance, plasma or urine amino acid analysis will frequently show an elevation of methionine and the presence of homocysteine. Many neonatal screening programs include methionine as a metabolite. The disorder may be distinguished from the re-methylation defects (e.g., MTHFR, methionine synthase deficiency, or the cobalamin defects) in lieu of the elevated methionine concentration. Additionally, organic acid analysis or quantitative determination of methylmalonic acid should help to exclude cobalamin (vitamin B12) defects and vitamin B12 deficiency giving a differential diagnosis.
The hydrogen bond criterion for beta turns, applied to polypeptides whose amino acids are linked by trans peptide bonds, gives rise to just four categories, as shown by Venkatachalam in 1968. They are called types I, II, I' and II'. All occur regularly in proteins and polypeptides but type I is most common, because it most resembles an alpha helix, occurring within 310 helices and at the ends of some classic alpha helices. Type II beta turns, on the other hand, often occur in association with beta-sheet as part of beta-links. The four types of beta turn are distinguished by the φ, ψ angles of residues i+1 and i+2 as shown in the table below giving the typical average values. Glycines are especially common as amino acids with positive φ angles; for prolines such a conformation is sterically impossible but they occur frequently at amino acid positions where φ is negative.

Staley met guitarist Jerry Cantrell at a party in Seattle while working at Music Bank rehearsal studios in 1987. A few months before that, Cantrell had watched Staley performing with his then-band, Alice N' Chains, in his hometown at the Tacoma Little Theatre, and was impressed by his voice. Cantrell was homeless after being kicked out of his family's house, so Staley invited Cantrell to live with him at the Music Bank. The two fast friends lived as roommates for over a year in the dilapidated rehearsal space they shared. Alice N' Chains soon disbanded and Staley joined a funk band, which at the time also required a guitarist. He asked Cantrell to join as a sideman. Cantrell agreed on condition that Staley join his band, which at the time did not have a name and included drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr. They started auditioning terrible lead singers in front of Staley to send a hint, which made him angry. The final straw for Staley was when they auditioned a male stripper in front of him – he decided to join the band after that. Cantrell said this about Staley's voice: "I knew that voice was the guy I wanted to be playing with. It sounded like it came out of a 350-pound biker rather than skinny little Layne. I considered his voice to be my voice." Eventually the funk project broke up, and in 1987, Staley joined Cantrell's band on a full-time basis. The band had names like "Fuck" and "Diamond Lie", the latter being the name of Cantrell's previous band.

Harriet Jane Lawrence (September 13, 1883 – February 28, 1974) was an American physician and pathologist who was among the early women to specialize in laboratory medicine in the United States and the first known woman pathologist in Oregon. She earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1912 and established a clinical laboratory in Portland the following year, directing it for more than fifty years. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, Lawrence isolated hemolytic streptococcus from infected patients and developed a bacterial vaccine intended to combat secondary pneumonia associated with influenza. Although the viral cause of influenza was not yet understood, her work contributed to statewide treatment efforts and brought her national recognition. Over the course of her career, she supported the early medical career of Alan L. Hart and advocated for expanded opportunities for women in medicine.
=== Barcode-free hit discovery === Böcker, Pomplun, and colleagues developed a barcode-free hit discovery, wherein the small molecules serve as their own identifiers, acting as the ‘barcodes’ themselves. Known as the Self-Encoded Library (SEL) platform, this approach combines tandem mass spectrometry with custom software called COmbinatorial Mass Encoding Decoding Tool (COMET) for automated structure annotation. By removing the need for external tags, such as the bulky DNA sequences used in traditional DNA-encoded libraries (DELs), the platform eliminates potential interference with target binding and expands the range of compatible chemical reactions. The SEL platform enables direct screening of over half a million small molecules in a single experiment. This platform allowed scientists to identify binders for nucleic acid-binding targets like flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1), a DNA-processing enzyme overexpressed in multiple cancer types that was previously inaccessible to traditional DEL screenings. Furthermore, the platform democratizes drug discovery by utilizing standard mass spectrometry facilities and straightforward synthesis techniques that are accessible to smaller academic laboratories. There are some limitations to the SEL platform. Firstly, there is low scaffold diversity within individual libraries, as the chemistry is limited to the structures compatible with the COMET software. Additionally, SEL hits cannot be amplified, so the amount of material for each potential hit must account for the sensitivity limits of the mass spectrometer.

Lilly tried several product line extension strategies, including extended-release formulations and paying for clinical trials to test the efficacy and safety of fluoxetine in premenstrual dysphoric disorder and rebranding fluoxetine for that indication as "Sarafem" after it was approved by the FDA in 2000, following the recommendation of an advisory committee in 1999. The discovery of using fluoxetine to treat PMDD was made by Richard Wurtman at MIT; the patent was licensed to his startup, Interneuron, which in turn sold it to Lilly. To defend its Prozac revenue from generic competition, Lilly also fought a five-year, multimillion-dollar battle in court with the generic company Barr Pharmaceuticals to protect its patents on fluoxetine, and lost the cases for its line-extension patents, other than those for Sarafem, opening fluoxetine to generic manufacturers starting in 2001. When Lilly's patent expired in August 2001, generic drug competition decreased Lilly's sales of fluoxetine by 70% within two months. In 2000 an investment bank had projected that annual sales of Sarafem could reach $250 million. Sales of Sarafem reached about $85 million in 2002, and in that year Lilly sold its assets connected with the drug for $295 million to Galen Holdings, a small Irish pharmaceutical company specializing in dermatology and women's health that had a sales force tasked to gynecologists' offices; analysts found the deal sensible since the annual sales of Sarafem made a material financial difference to Galen, but not to Lilly.
== History == The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved motixafortide based on evidence from the GENESIS study, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, in which 122 participants with multiple myeloma, due to undergo autologous transplantation, were randomized 2:1 to receive motixafortide 1.25 mg/kg with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (N=80) or placebo with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (N=42) for mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells for collection and apheresis. This one trial evaluated the benefit and side effects of motixafortide in participants. The trial was conducted at 21 sites in five countries including Italy, Hungary, Germany, Spain, and the United States. There were 78 participants included in the trial from the United States, and 44 participants included from sites outside of the United States. The GENESIS trial was used to assess efficacy and safety.
"In the period 1821–1822, the liberator José de San Martín and Bernardo Monteagudo, his trusted minister, expropriated and squandered the mercantile and economic elite of Lima, without achieving the definitive independence of Peru. Monteagudo had little regard for the level of civilization and the democratic possibilities of Peruvians. His main objective was to eradicate the Spanish threat in independent La Plata and Chile at any cost, including the economic ruin of Peru. He confiscated wealth and other resources to organize local spy networks and covert operations, clearly damaging to gaining the confidence of the local population and their support for the cause of independence. (…) The kidnapping policy inaugurated by Monteagudo further undermined a weak tradition of the right to property and laid the foundations for politically motivated expropriations. The agricultural and urban properties confiscated from royalist Spaniards and Creoles, mainly in the central coast region, were valued at approximately two million pesos. This policy caused greater economic problems and a drop in investment. (...) Eventually, most of the expropriated assets were awarded to military officers who sought compensation and rewards for their patriotic exploits. Among the high-ranking officers who received these rewards we have Antonio José de Sucre, Bernardo O'Higgins, and José Rufino Echenique. Juan Francisco Ryes, Blas Sardeña and José María Plaza, among others. In the provinces, local officials repeated the abuses of power and the plundering committed in the name of the patriot cause.

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a naturally occurring nucleotide and an intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis.
No. NMN is a precursor that can be converted to NAD+ in cells. NAD+ is the larger dinucleotide that participates in many redox reactions.
Small amounts of NMN have been reported in several foods, including certain vegetables and fruits. The measured levels vary, and the significance of dietary intake is not fully established.
Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry is common because it can quantify low levels of NMN in complex samples. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is used for simpler purity checks. Nuclear magnetic resonance can confirm identity and detect some impurities.
